Credit Card Help – I’m 18?
I would like to know what steps I need to take in order to secure a credit card. I’m only 18 so I’m unsure if I will be able to do this without a signature from another credit card holder, or what.
I’m using the credit card for online stock trading. Please don’t reply with credit advice because i’ve probably read more finance books than most educated adults.
I would like to do this through my credit union. American First. Will they have cards available there?
Help!
Yes, you can get your own “Credit Card” without any one’s co-sign.
Assuming you do not have any Credit History – You need to build enough credit before you can get a “Un-Secured Credit Card”.
To Clarify – Most credit cards are unsecured – meaning you do not need to have a ‘Deposit” with the Bank which gives you a Credit Card.
Back to Building Credit – Your Credit Union would have a
product for “Secured Credit Card” – For this they will ask
you to put a Deposit – A Certificate of Deposit Account – and
they will give a ‘Credit Limit” of the Amount you Deposit.
Let’s say you opened an account of CD with $500. And got
a “Secured Credit Card”. This card will offer you all the
benefits of a Credit Card with a Limit of $500.
Remember you can spend ‘Maximum’ $500 in this case – meaning if you borrow $500 on the ‘Secured Credit Card” – until you pay back the $500 – you can not use the credit card.
The best part is that this will build your “Credit History”. And normally in an year or so you will have enough credit history to apply for a ‘unsecured / normal Credit card’.
Please visit your Credit Union and ask them for “Secured Credit Card” and they will help you further.
Good Luck.
